Introduction

This project talks about the landscape transformation of the Apuan Alps in Tuscany, Italy. The Apuan Alps is a fascinating place due to its geological, botanical and landscape characteristics. It is also the site where the famous, white Carrara marble is extracted.

Every year approximately 5,000,000 tons of the mountain are removed via its quarries but only a minimal amount is for ornamental use. In fact, about 75% of the extracted marble is made up of fragments, mostly employed in the production of calcium carbonate.

This material is widely used in the industry. It can be found in bleached paper, cosmetics, foods, toothpaste, paints, glues, detergents, plastics, rubber, glass, ceramics and more. Most of these products we use in our daily lives.

But every day the environmental impact increases and the landscape is undergoing irreversible changes.

We need long-term strategies, oriented towards sustainable activities, in order to start a different trend. Otherwise the problem will be resolved only when the mountains have been completely erased.

Andrea Foligni is an Italian photographer and currently lives in Prato, Italy. Apuan Carbonate was presented during Slideluck Naples.

Multimedia Tips

a. What program was used to create the multimedia?

I worked with Adobe Premier.

b. How and why did you choose that sound/music?

I think original music increases the value of multimedia projects. So I decided to use a music especially created for this work. I worked with a couple of friends of mine, Samuele and Gabriele Cecchi. They made the music and I made the edit with the images, timing and rhythm. The final multimedia was a result of good teamwork. I also used the quarries sound effects to explain the acoustic pollution in Apuan Alps area.

c. Tell us about the editing process when you think of a multimedia.

Apuan Carbonate is my first multimedia. In my next work I would like to use stills, videos, drawings, sounds, graphics and animations to share more feelings, information and nuances of the story.
