“The Two Of Us” by Fan Shi San was featured in Hungry Still, a Slideluck London retrospective unique photo cook-book, in which artists were asked to think of a recipe related to their photo-stories, and  to tell us a personal anecdote. This is what Fan Shi San sent us.

“I started Two of Us in 2009. I photographed people who grew up as an only child in China with an imaginary sibling. They are all an only child as a result of the strict 30 years of the One-Child Policy.

This is a recipe provided by a girl in the series, “Each dumpling has the same size and the same taste.”

-500 g flour
-200 g cold water

– 150 g ground pork
– 150 g finely shredded mushroom 5g salt
– 5 cl rice wine

Prepare the dough: Stir cold water slowly into the flour, knead the dough into a smooth ball. Divide it into small pieces. Roll each piece into 10 cm diameter circle. Prepare the filling by adding the pork, mushroom, salt and rice wine together, stirring until well mixed.

To make the dumplings, place a spoon of the filling into the middle of the dough, wet the edge and fold it over the filling, pinch the edge to seal. To cook, boil a large pot of water and add the dumplings.

Cook for 15 minutes. Drain and serve.

Multimedia Tips

a. What program was used to create the multimedia?

When make slideshow iMovie is the way to go. Sometimes I also use Lightroom to edit the slideshow.

b. How and why did you choose that sound/music?

That sound  was a composition of ambient and voice. I asked one of my friends to read this “Two of Us ” series ’s statement in a slow and calm voice.

The ambient was from field recording I did several years before, in a park, the sound is made by Cicada.

c. Tell us about the editing process when you think of a multimedia.

I prefer to edit first on the voice, then follows the meaning to arrange images.
